Ethnicity and Gender Matter in Hair Surgeries, Too

It is not easy to qualify for a hair restoration surgery. For instance, aside from the degree of hair loss, the surgeon will also have to learn the patient’s personal goals in getting the surgery; goals are actually one of the decisive factors if a surgical hair restoration is really necessary.

Not all patients can be ideal candidates for a surgical hair restoration. In fact, because of certain features that make every individual unique, qualifying a patient could turn out to be a challenge to physicians.

Ethnicity and gender considerations, in particular, are important aspects that require assessment in the development of a restorative plan. These factors decide the characteristics of the patient’s hair. If, for instance, the patient is a South Asian, his/her hair attributes differ greatly from that of a Caucasian patient; hence, the Asian patient’s restorative plan will be different from the Caucasian’s. Additionally, the inherited characteristics will determine whether the shape, size, body, volume, and strength of the hair will pass. All these matters will be addressed carefully by the hair restoration expert in order to have the most appropriate restorative plan.

Generally, the physician will look at the physical features (e.g. body size and shape, skin colour and tone, hair colour and characteristics; biological features (e.g. hormonal patterns, genetic inheritance patterns); and cultural factors (e.g. food choices, clothing choices, hairstyling) — all of which contribute to a unique individual appearance.

Ethnic Considerations

The head shape, hair characteristics, hair density, skin thickness and cultural preferences are just among the most common ethnic considerations that shape the restorative plan. The shape of the head determines how hair will be transplanted for appropriate framing. Most importantly, the hair characteristics such as the hair density, calibre, scalp colour in contrast with the hair colour, and the hair curl will determine the best possible aesthetic outcome. The hair density decides how much hair will be available for transplantation. The hair curl and calibre are important in determining the coverage.

Gender Considerations

In terms of the gender considerations, the pattern of hair loss, hair characteristics, cultural influence, and predisposal for shock loss (temporary hair loss after surgery) are also among the common influential factors.

All of these gender and ethic considerations regarding hair restoration surgery should be addressed properly by means of having open discussions during consultation between the individual seeking surgical hair restoration and the hair restoration specialist. In this manner, all uncertainties clouding the patient’s mind will also be properly addressed.
